Firefighters from Shrewsbury tackled the flames in woods off Frankwell car park last night.

The fire began just after 9pm when baking heat of the day had lowered to a balmy 16C.

The crew used a knapsack sprayer to put out the flames by 9.30pm.

It is not yet known how the fire was caused but a small amount of rubbish was ablaze when crews arrived.

Shropshire Fire Service today reiterated its appeal for people to take care during the current heatwave. It said many areas of grassland had now become very dry, despite torrential storms last weekend.

The forecast is for it to remain hot and dry into the weekend.
