Achievements included overcoming physical or educational problems, giving help and guidance to other pupils, and displaying leadership in school activities.

The Rotary Club of Wem presented its young achiever awards during a presentation evening at St Peter's Primary School in Wem.

The club's senior vice president Iain McHardy presented framed awards to pupils Owen Grocott, Robert Tanulak, Dylan Anten, Aaron Jones, Shannon Jennings and Luke Roberts(ALL CORR).

The pupils represented schools in Clive, Myddle, Newtown, Shawbury, Wem and Whixall.

Shannon was chosen as the overall 2014 Wem & District Young Achiever and presented with the Paul Harris Shield.

Mr McHardy said: "All the award recipients were selected by their school teachers and members of the Rotary club, not just for their academic successes, but also for their ability to either overcome personal difficulties or helping their fellow pupils during their time at school.

"In the case of Shannon, her achievements go beyond school where at home she is a carer for an adult epilepsy sufferer."

The late Paul Harris was a Rotarian devoted to serving young adults with learning and physical difficulties.

Meanwhile, young chefs wowed the judges in a recent cookery contest organised by the Rotary Club of Wem & District for year six pupils attending eight local primary schools.

The competition was held in the food technology department at Thomas Adams School in Wem.

All the competitors had to prepare and cook a single course for two people within one hour on a budget of less than £5.

They were judged on their kitchen skills, hygiene, food presentation and taste.

Liam Rogers, of St Peter's Primary School, was declared the overall winner with his main course of mini taco bowls created from tortilla wraps, minced beef, salsa, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream with chives at a cost of just £3.39 for two people.

The award for the best dessert went to Tomas Benbow(CORR), also of St Peter's, with his presentation of mango, passion fruit, lemon, light condensed milk and fat-free yoghurt.

All the entrants will be attending Thomas Adams School in the autumn term and will have the opportunity to enter the senior Rotary young chef competition next spring.
