Wem Vehicles of Interest Rally included a grand parade of classic cars and jeeps around the town centre

The event, which was held on Wem Recreation Ground on Sunday, tied in with Wem Sweet Pea Show over the weekend.

Mike Howell, one of the organisers, said: "We had record numbers and it was a very successful event.

"Everyone seemed to enjoy it and we raised money for Midlands Air Ambulance. We are not sure on the final total yet.

"We are estimating over 300 vehicles took part in the event. We were very lucky with the weather."

The owner of the most interesting vehicle on the day was awarded the Castle Hotel Perpetual Challenge Trophy and £100. There were also cash prizes for second and third.

The winner of the trophy was Martin Prior of Herefordshire, who owns a 1933 Austin 7.

He said: "I am very pleased. I have owned the car 41 years and I use it as every day transport.

"It is out in all weather all year round and I do about 5,000 miles a year.

"It is quite an unusual show as vehicles are judged on interest rather than excessive shininess. One thing my vehicle isn't is shiny.

"It is the first time I have taken part in the event. I heard about it through family contacts."

Local garage proprietor Ben Young, who has masterminded the classic vehicle event since its beginning 16 years ago, said: "We wanted something to complement the floral displays and came up with the idea of a gathering of interesting vehicles.

"For the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in 2012 we introduced the parade around the town centre. This proved so popular that it is now a permanent feature of the event."

There was no entry charge for participants or spectators.

"We can achieve this because of the sponsorship support that we get from local businesses," said Mr Young."

"It's amazing what you can achieve when you join forces to do something to put the town on the map."
