Talks on future of Shropshire fire service

The future of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will be discussed at public meetings this week. The authority has been told to save another £900,000 by 2020, on top of £3.2m cut since 2010.

Meetings will focus on cost-saving proposals – one is moving the Shrewsbury-based control room out of county and merge it with another 999 centre. Meetings will be from 6.30pm at fire stations in Bridgnorth today, Telford Central tomorrow and Shrewsbury fire headquarters on Wednesday. Ludlow, Market Drayton and Oswestry have heard of fears lives could be at risk.

The watch manager at Shrewsbury control centre, said if the control room amalgamated with Hereford and Worcester it could halve the number of staff on duty across both areas.

And chief fire officer John Redmond said the control staff do a "wonderful job" and the proposal was a cost-cutting exercise.
