The figure for the development of a 200-boat marina, 250 homes, 120-bed hotel, restaurant and leisure spa by the Wharf in Ellesmere has been revealed in planning documents which were going on display today at a public drop-in session in the town.

Planning agent Nigel Thorns says a planning application is due to be submitted in the coming weeks for the project, which will also provide space for holiday cabins and caravans.

The scheme first became public more than 18 months ago and has already been welcomed by councillors and business leaders who hope it will boost employment and tourism in the town.

Lincoln McMullan, chairman of Ellesmere Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: "I can't wait for it to happen.

"Ellesmere needs it. We need employment and the jobs are welcome.

"It will bring more business in the town. Like all market towns Ellesmere is suffering and this will provide a lifeline for businesses to be able to carry on in the future.

"We are all waiting for it to happen."

The site has been promoted as part of Shropshire Council's Site Allocation and Management Development plan (SAMDev), which seeks to guide all new development in the county until 2026.

Today's drop-in session at Ellesmere Town Hall was taking place between 3pm and 8pm.
