Motorists waited over an hour and half in tailbacks after traffic ground to a halt on the A5 between Wellington and Shrewsbury on Friday evening.

There were reports of people getting out of their cars and even playing football and an improvised game of golf on the carriageway around junction 7 of the major trunk road into Shrewsbury.

The traffic chaos was caused by a two-vehicle crash involving an ambulance, a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said.

The accident happened at the junction with Pelham Road, just outside Shrewsbury at about 5.10pm, she said.
