Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski today repeated calls for a multi-storey car park to be built in the town in time for the new direct rail link.

Mr Kawczynski will be meeting with both Network Rail and Arriva Trains in a bid to make the vision a reality, and he believes a car park would be vital for the county's direct rail link to London.

Commuters will be able to travel direct to London as of Christmas, following a long-standing Shropshire Star campaign.

Mr Kawczynski believes a multi-storey car park will be vital for commuters who wish to use the service, and he has already held several meetings in the House of Commons with train bosses.

He is still confident that a new car park may be built following plans for further talks, with the rail link set to open in a matter of months.

He said: "It's a work in progress and I am hoping for a meeting with Network Rail and Arriva Trains very soon.

"There are continued and co-ordinated discussions taking place so it's still very much going on."

The car park would be built on a current car park behind the railway station which is also used by staff at the nearby Royal Mail building.

Currently there is limited short-term car parking available on the station's forecourt, and the nearest multi-storey car park is at Raven Meadows.

More than 3,000 people signed a petition as part of the Shropshire Star's campaign to restore a direct rail link to the capital.

The Office of Rail Regulation confirmed in November last year a direct route would be brought back.

Mr Kawczynski has also previously called on the train station to be spruced up, and he has been in ongoing discussions with train bosses for several months now.
