Letter: Just underlining comments from a party spokeswoman

I write in response to  David Kelly, Ukip PPC for Ludlow, commenting on letters from both myself and MEP Anthea McIntyre.

It was noble of Mr Kelly to point out how well qualified he is. As a retired headmaster I would hope that he did indeed have good qualifications. However, even with such a fine education, he seems to have failed to 'grasp' what I actually wrote.

I did not suggest that Ukip voters were ill educated, I was merely commenting on remarks made by Suzanne Evans, Ukip's communities spokeswoman on the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme.

It was she that suggested that the poor results by Ukip in London were due to the well educated Londoners. Her actual quote was: "There is work to do, I think we haven't really got our message across in London," she said. "As you say, we do have a more media-savvy, well-educated population in London, and they are more likely, I think, to have read some of the negative press that's been about us and I think they've been more likely to believe it."

So Ms Evans thinks that the Ukip message didn't get across to Londoners because of their media-savvy, well-educated population.

My point was, and I think it is pretty clear to anyone who heard the programme, that the people outside of London, who did vote Ukip did so due to their lack of media-savvy and education. I think that is a fair assumption to make, given that is what the Ukip Party spokeswoman seems to believe.

Speaking as someone with an Honours Degree, a Masters Degree and a PGCE myself, I will be interested to see what policies and commitments Mr Kelly is going to make to his supporters and other people who live in the Shropshire area.
