Bomb disposal experts detonate suspect package found near RAF Cosford

Bomb disposal experts today carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package found near RAF Cosford.

Long Lane, close to the Shropshire base, was closed after the discovery of the package .

The contents of the package were found to be innocuous after inspection by officers from West Mercia Police.

Chris Kay, Squadron Leader RAF Cosford, said: "A suspect package was found and was reported to the security authorities.

"A controlled explosion carried out by an external agency who we normally contact, who are bomb disposal experts.

"We are confident this device now carries no threat and we've put a restriction around the site.

"We're still trying get all the details together about what the package was."

Long Lane was reopened just before 11.30am.

Sam Cook, a spokesman from West Mercia Police, said: "Long Road was closed near Cosford while officers attended to a suspect package.

"The package ended up not being suspect and has now been cleared.

"Roads are now open and we would like to thank people for their patience while officers dealt with the incident."
