Stefen Boswell, 20, from Wolverhampton, was driving the car when it hit a lamp post on the A5 near Atcham at 2.15am last Friday.

West Mercia Police said the car had been reported stolen in a burglary in Craven Arms at about 2am.

The force said it had referred the crash to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

An inquest into Mr Boswell's death was opened today by Shropshire coroner John Ellery at Shrewsbury's Guildhall.

The inquest was told Mr Boswell lived at St Anne's Road, Wolverhampton, and he was described as a single, unemployed man.

A 19-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to University Hospital North Staffordshire suffering from head, facial and suspected spinal injuries.

The crash caused tailbacks that lasted more than six hours after the A5 was closed.

The inquest was adjourned until August 30.
