Councillor Frank Hemmings told Chirk Town Council last nighthe was targeted by someone purporting to be from BT who tried to trick him into revealing his bank details.

He told fellow councillors to be aware of similar scams.

The councillor said the fraudster called up offering to help him with a problem with his computer.

Councillor Hemmings said after he became suspicious of the caller's motives he reported the call to the police who passed the information on to the national Action Fraud programme.

He said he had since received a letter from Action Fraud saying his information had helped bring a stop to the fraud.
