The large prize pot has been put forward by county businesses Pure Communications, Cooper Green Pooks, Beaumont Lawrence and Stan Cycles, who are all sponsoring the Shrewsbury Cycle Grand Prix, which will take place on May 25.

The event, organised by the Paramount Cycling Racing Team, is proving very popular with cyclists from across the country, with the amateur race already full.

There are prizes for the first 10 riders crossing the finish line in each race and an extra £600 prize fund available for Preems, which are mini races within the main race.

For both the Women Only Race and the "Pro Crit", there is a prize fund of £1,300.

The winner of the Women Only race will win £500 plus a set of Bontrager race wheels, worth £250 and Tifosi Podium Glasses worth £60.

The winner of the pro race will also win £500 plus a Cateye GPS Computer worth £90 and a pair of glasses.

In the Amateur Crit, the winner will receive £100 plus a £150 Altura Clothing Voucher and a pair of glasses.

"It's a fantastic prize fund for our first race," said race organiser Ben Lawrence, managing director of Beaumont Lawrence, which is also sponsoring the event. "We want to attract top regional and national racers and this prize fund should certainly get people in."

He said: "It will be a fast, competitive race and we want to get the race known in future years as one of the top women's races. We would love women in the West Midlands to come out to support their local race. They just need a British Cycling Race Licence."

Victoria Grimmer, a member of the Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team, will be taking part in the Women Only race. She said: "I can't wait to race in my own town. I know there are lots of great women cyclists out there. It's just a question of making them aware of the race and getting them to sign up."

The course will run round part of the town centre. Roads will be closed to traffic from about mid morning until 8pm.
