Dogged heroine Judy saves her Shropshire owner's life a second time

Judy the labrador-cross is proving a really dogged heroine after springing into action to save her Shropshire owner's life for the second time.

First, Judy saved Sharon Brooks by bringing her a chocolate bar as the pensioner suffered a diabetic attack at her home near Ludlow.

That was four years ago and now the devoted dog has done it again by jumping up and "punching" Miss Brooks on the back to make her dislodge and cough out a piece of toast on which she had been choking.

"She is an absolute marvel," said 61-year-old Miss Brooks.

"I really don't know what I'd do without her. She is a real life-saver."

Judy leapt up and "thumped" Miss Brooks on the back, dislodging a piece of toast which had got stuck in the pensioner's throat.

Miss Brooks, from Little Hereford, near Ludlow, said: "Judy is my life and now I owe her my life."

Miss Brooks said she was in her kitchen, snacking on a piece of toast when a piece got stuck in her throat.

"I was choking and feeling dizzy, I just couldn't get my breath and started to panic. I was frightened to death," she said. "Then Judy came in, started to fuss round me and realised something was wrong.

"She jumped up and punched me in the back between my shoulder blades as I was bending over, coughing. That dislodged the toast and I eventually got my breath back.

"If she hadn't been there I don't know what would have happened. Judy is just fantastic. She is more like a human than any dog I know."

Miss Brooks had labrador-springer spaniel-cross Judy as a puppy seven years ago. The first time Judy famously came to her owner's rescue was four years ago when, as Miss Brooks was falling into a diabetic coma, the faithful hound brought her a Mars bar to revive her.

A grateful Miss Brooks added: "They say a dog is a man's best friend, well she's certainly mine."
