Big rise in Shropshire self-built homes is predicted

More Shropshire people look set to build their own homes, according to a county-based construction firm.

The trend follows the government's introduction of the Right to Build scheme, which will give people power to buy land from local authorities to build their own houses, as well as an injection of £150 million of funding to help buyers and small builders.

Andy Carloman, from CPS in Telford, said: "We work across the whole spectrum of construction but we do specialise in self-build projects so this announcement is a big boost for us. We have got busier as this year has gone on and even more so since the news broke about these new schemes being pushed by the government."

It is not yet clear exactly how the government schemes will work.

"As with all these things I suspect the devil will be in the detail, but announcements like this just strengthen people's confidence that they can build their own home," he added.
