Shrewsbury town centre public toilets reopen

A row of toilets in the heart of Shrewsbury town centre, which have taken more than a year to renovate and re-build, were finally set to open to the public today.

The toilets, in Butcher Row, include the county's first publicly funded disabled changing places and have been built as part of an overhaul of the public toilet block in the heart of Shrewsbury.

The male toilets at Butcher Row closed in 2010. The female toilets were then closed last spring, while a complete renovation of the site was carried out.

The new facility, opening in time for the Easter break, was designed by Shrewsbury firm Base Architecture and Design and contains male, female and disabled facilities, along with a baby changing area, all at ground level.

Around £50,000 has been spent on providing Shropshire's first and only publicly-funded changing places facility which will cater for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets such as those with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
