More then 30 motorists were caught in a two-hour period ignoring a no entry sign on Princess Street to try to gain access on to Shoplatch.

The road is closed to traffic except for loading and unloading, but drivers have been using the route as a short cut through the town centre, putting pedestrians at risk.

West Mercia Police have warned that offenders may now face fines and points on their license after more then 30 motorists were reported for traffic offences.

Constable Karena Evans of Shrewsbury Central Safer Neighbourhood Team said enforcements may be carried out in the future, because drivers are "blatantly" ignoring the law.

She said: "More than 30 motorists were caught taking this illegal short cut during a recent two-hour period.

"They have been reported for a traffic offence and may now face prosecution with the possibility of a fine and penalty points on their licence.

"Offenders are blatantly disregarding the regulations and thereby risking a collision with pedestrians.

"We have received a number of complaints and may well be carrying out further enforcements if the problem continues."
