He may be too young to drive on the county's roads but teenager Ben Cross will be taking to the hills at speed this weekend when he competes at Shropshire's premier motor sport venue.

The 16-year-old will follow in his father's footsteps when he competes at the Loton Park speed hill climb at Alberbury, near Shrewsbury..

Ben, from High Street, Claverley, near Bridgnorth, is studying for his GCSEs at Bridgnorth Endowed School. But his exams will be far from his mind when he takes on the narrow and demanding course through the deer park of Sir Michael Leighton's stately home.

"I have been at my father's side in racing, carrying tools and tyres as pit crew, since I was very young," said Ben. "I have developed a shared passion for motorsport in general, but speed hill climbing in particular."

Ben and father Tim have been working on his one-litre Toyota Yaris over the winter.

Following lots of practice on private roads and circuits he will make his debut in the Hagley Car Club members' championship on Sunday.

Tim, who is an instructor at the Loton Park Driving Schools, said: "I am so proud of the effort and dedication that Ben has put into helping with the preparation of the car and also his mature attitude towards responsible motor racing.

"After years of bringing him to spectate and assist at events it will be absolutely fantastic to actually see him in action competing against fellow members of the club.

"I have every confidence that he will thoroughly enjoy himself in this growing sport."

Tim will also be competing on Monday, sharing an OMS sports racing car with another father and son team from Claverley, veteran driver Charles Williams and his son, James.

James is an engineer with the F1 Mercedes team and will be driving his own RPM single-seater racing car.

Other local entrants entered into the Easter Sunday and Monday events include Bridgnorth estate agent Nick Tart in his classic March racing car, Trevor Lacey of Shifnal in a Renault Clio and Graham Wynn of Shifnal in a Force Sports LM.
