Proposals have been unveiled to create up to 190 homes – 100 off Tarporley Road and up to 90 off Alport Road.

David Wilson Homes has submitted a full planning application to Shropshire Council build the homes off Tarporley Road, which would include a mix of two to five-bedroom properties.

Meanwhile, Liberty Properties has submitted an outline planning application to the council to build on land off Alport Road, which would also include a mix of two to five-bedroom properties.

Councillor Rob Hewson, mayor of Whitchurch, said new housing is needed in the town, but only if it is in the right place.

"We need new houses to keep the economy going," he said.

"We have had the largest number of shops open in the last 12 months that I can remember and we need more people to support these. We need new houses but they have got to be in the right places."

Under the David Wilson Homes scheme, the properties would be built on the site of Mount Farm. About 80 residents attended a public exhibition in November last year to hear more about the scheme, which includes 10 affordable homes.

Feedback forms were available for people to record their views at the time – 51.6 per cent of whom objected to the development in principle.

A report on behalf of the applicant said: "This proposed scheme will provide much-needed housing within reach of local amenities, facilities and with good transport links. In turn, it will encourage greater activity in the area to support the local economy. The development of this site will improve and enhance the appearance of the area and allow existing services to benefit from a larger neighbourhood population."

Meanwhile, Liberty Properties says its proposed site for housing off Alport Road is currently used as grazing land.

A report submitted on behalf of the applicant said: "The scheme will aim to deliver a range of high quality homes, including affordable housing, which will enhance the choice of homes in Whitchurch.

"It is submitted that the site offers a sustainable location."
