Shropshire Council, ip&e – the company run by the council - and the University of Chester, are working together to develop the new higher education institution in the county.

Bosses have been meeting regularly to discuss the university, which will initially be known as the University of Chester Shrewsbury Institute and within 10 years is expected to become a free-standing university in its own right.

The institution will be based in Shrewsbury, although the precise location of its campus and student accommodation is yet to be decided.

More than 20 courses have been set up and will be made open to applications for students in the next few weeks.
