The scheme, which will cost around £5.5 million pounds, is part of a wider regeneration of the area and has been given investments through the Government's Homes and Communities Agency (HCA)

Seddon Construction is building the 49 new homes across five sites on behalf of the housing and care provider Sanctuary Group, and the builds should be completed in spring 2015.

The development, close to the Sutton Hill Local Centre, will include a mix of apartments, houses and two bungalows for affordable rent as well as one 2-bedroom house and four 3-bedroom houses available to buy on a shared ownership basis.

Sanctuary said it hopes to use as much local labour as possible and plans to take on new apprentices and offering work experience placements on the site.

Ian Calder, regional manager from Seddon, said: "We are excited to be working on the Sutton Hill development and have already recruited a local apprentice as well as offering work experience placements.

"As part of our National Skills Academy for Construction status, we have made Sutton Hill an academy site which will mean a big focus on employment and training opportunities."

To mark the start of construction at the Sutton Hill development, Telford MP David Wright joined Sanctuary on Thursday afternoon for a walk-about at the site.
