Letter: Unfair use of speed cameras

I received a speeding notice from West Mercia Police informing me that I had been recorded doing 58mph between junctions six  and seven westbound of the M54.

Average speed cameras on the M54 in Shropshire

On the time and day in question, I had extreme difficulty in joining the motorway at the speed in force at the time from the slip road due to the significant lane alterations because of the road works westbound at junction six.

The volume of traffic and the avoidance of heavy goods vehicles is of paramount importance so as to avoid causing a road traffic accident.

Monitoring ones speed to negotiate filtering in to traffic when joining a motorway can be an extremely dangerous and difficult thing to do at the best of times but with the added dangers of the road works such as those at junction six only adds to that difficulty and danger.

My second point is the positioning of the cameras so close to the slip road is ludicrous and considering the road works finish approximately 150 to 200 metres after the slip road this leaves hardly any time to adjust your speed to comply with the speed restrictions in force at the time after having safely joined the flow of traffic.

To have a set monitor you for 150-200 metres from the slip road to the road works end is despicable.

It will be interesting to see how much of the £500,000 in fines is used to repair the roads in Telford.
