Kenneth William Hogg was caught trying to steal the food from Sainsbury's in Telford. On January 16, Hogg, 38, put items from the meat aisle into a bag and left without paying. A group of workers caught him.

Mrs Kate Price, prosecuting, said Hogg told the workers, "I didn't think you could be arrested for your first shoplifting, I thought it was just a ticket.

"This was not his first shoplift," she added.

Jonathan Mason, for Hogg, who had pleaded guilty, said: "He has been out of trouble for some three years. He is keen to say this is not the start of going back to his old ways.It was a one-off where he dabbled in heroin again."

Mr Mason said Hogg, of Oxford Street, Oakengates, had incurred debts due to his drug use and stole the meat in order to pay back the money."

Hogg was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85, plus a £15 victim's surcharge.
