Volunteers to steer Telford Food Bank through the process of becoming a registered charity and beyond are being sought.

The food bank opened in April last year in response to the increasing difficulties that individuals and families were having in buying enough food and basic provisions.

It has since grown considerably and Telford Crisis Network, a partnership of organisations working together to help local people, has decided to formally register as a charity to be known as Telford Crisis Support.

As part of the process, volunteer trustees are needed for the charity's board.

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, employment and skills, said: "The fact that Telford Food Bank is working towards becoming a charitable organisation shows just how successful the scheme has been since it began almost a year ago.

"It's important to bring a good mix of people together on the board of trustees who can support and enhance the charitable trust from day one, and I'd urge anyone who thinks they have something to offer Telford Crisis Support to get in touch.

"Obviously the success of the food bank shows just how many people are struggling to make ends meet and fulfil their basic needs, which is why the council and its partners are working on much more than managing those in crisis, and is looking to improve the lives, skills and opportunities of all those in need."

The board needs people for a number of roles including chairman, treasurer and secretary, as well as other more specific roles based around skills the new organisation needs.

Telford Crisis Network wants to give local people the opportunity to get involved.
