Construction chiefs were today appearing in court over the collapse of a huge canopy at a school which left five workers seriously injured.

Bosses of Adstone Construction Ltd were at Shrewsbury Crown Court to answer charges brought by the Health and Safety Executive in relation to the collapse while the new Abraham Darby Academy in Telford was being built.

Roofers fell 13ft when the heavy steel canopy came crashing down in August 2011.

Five workers suffered injuries ranging from fractures and broken bones to cuts and bruising.

The wreckage delayed the opening of the £35 million school by almost a year. Pupils took their first lessons in the new classrooms in last July.
