The boy was knocked down on the traffic light controlled crossing near the Doddington roundabout in Whitchurch.

The car knocked the youngster off his feet and he suffered bruising and grazing after landed heavily.

The vehicle involved continued without stopping towards Whitchurch town centre shortly after 4.30pm on Wednesday.

Police say the boy was with another youngster of the same age and were using the crossing between Queensway and Edgeley Road as they walked home from school.

The car was described as a blue compact hatchback.

Constable Steve Dalziel, the investigating officer in the case, said: "The boy was lucky to have suffered only minor injuries.

"I would ask the driver to contact Whitchurch or Shrewsbury police stations.

"I am also appealing for witnesses of the incident, or anyone who knows the driver, to get in touch."

A man who lives near the crossing but did not want to be named said: "I was driving home from work and as I approached the crossing I knew something was not quite right.

"I noticed a car was parked on the pavement and I saw an someone holding an umbrella over someone," he added.

"I live nearby and I when I got home I saw flashing blue lights."
