The plea was made after a woman suffered hand injuries after being attacked by a man with a knife yesterday morning.

He struck at the Coney Green footpath off Black Gate Street near Sainsbury's supermarket at 6.50am.

Police said the victim's injuries were not too serious and that a knife had been retrieved from the scene.

A police cordon was set up for the morning to seal off the footpath where it crosses the Cambrian railway line.

Investigations are continuing into what role the knife played in the woman's injuries.

The attacker has been described as a white man in his 20s and was wearing a light hooded top and a darker coloured anorak.

Officers have appealed for witnesses and said town businesses may be also be able to help.

West Mercia Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: "Investigations are continuing and we are asking businesses and householders in the vicinity who have CCTV to check if they have picked up any evidence.

"The female victim managed to fend off the white, 'scruffy', male offender who was forced to flee the scene without stealing anything.

"The female suffered injuries to her hand but thankfully they're not too serious."

Mr Ammonds said the attacker approached the victim from behind.

He said after managing to get away from the attacker, the victim ran towards the Morrisons supermarket to call for help.

The attacker was last seen running off towards Gas Works Bridge along the railway line.

Anyone with information about this is asked to call 101 as soon as possible.
