Already more than 2,080 supporters have signed the online petition, and dozens more have completed the version published in the newspaper.

MPs and business leaders say a direct rail link between Shropshire and London is vital to the future prosperity of the county.

And Shropshire Star readers agree with them.

Kathleen Burton, of Wem, said: "A direct link to London is very much needed."

She said it would help Shropshire businesses become more involved with the rest of the UK.

And on a personal note she says she would no longer have to travel to the capital via stations such as Crewe, saving her time.

Meanwhile, some of our older readers say a direct link would make rail travel easier, cutting out the need to change trains.

Roger Finlay, of Shrewsbury, said: "As an OAP it is important for me that we have an uncomplicated rail service to London where I have family who I like to see on a regular basis."

Desmond Delany, also of Shrewsbury, said: "Changing trains is a grave inconvenience to the aged, one that's sufficient to deter me from ever going to London at present."

And Pamela Crump, of Shrewsbury, added: "As I'm in my 80s it is great to travel to London without changing stations. The previous service was excellent."

Others, including Ann Kaleta, of Wellington, say a new rail link would make it much cheaper and easier to visit the capital for West End shows, shopping or visiting relatives.

However, according to many people, the link would also bring more tourists to Shropshire.

Investment

Ronald Jeffrey Holden, of Telford said: "A direct rail connection from Shropshire to London is a vital requirement to encourage incoming business investment and to encourage tourism to our beautiful county which in turn will boost the local businesses and economy."

And William Jones, of Wellington, added: "This is a very important issue for the County of Shropshire and my town, Wellington.

"A direct rail link from London will help us attract tourists to our beautiful Wrekin and our busy market."
