The 70-year-old, who lives at The Grange in Bishop's Castle, enlisted the help of her friend and fellow resident Marjorie Edwards to make the card.

She then signed it on behalf of all the residents at the Kerry Lane home before sending it off to Buckingham Palace before the Duke of Cambridge's birthday last month.

Helen Major, who works at the home, said they were stunned to receive a reply from the palace which included a picture of the Prince, in response to the card.

The letter, written by aide Claudia Spens, says: "The Duke of Cambridge has asked me to thank you for your letter of June 20 which you have so kindly sent, and for Miss Kathleen Price's home-made card for the occasion of his birthday.

"His Royal Highness was thrilled to receive such a lovely card and was touched that Miss Price made it herself.

"It really was most thoughtful.

"As a thank you I have enclosed a picture that I hope Miss Price will like.

"The Duke of Cambridge has asked me to send you Miss Price and all the residents of The Grange Care Home his warmest thanks and best wishes."

Mrs Major said: "Kathleen and Marjorie were absolutely delighted to get a reply from William and love the picture he sent with it.

"They both put a lot of work into the card and were very keen to send it for his birthday.

"Kathleen is now saying she wants to send him a present for when he becomes a father, so they are both busy working on something for that now."

"It has really put a smile on both their faces, which is great to see."

The prince's wife Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is due to give birth to the couple's first child at any moment.

In May, Buckingham Palace said that the royal baby would be born in "mid-July".

A source then claimed Kate had announced July 13 as the official date during a family barbecue.

Since then, various other suggestions have been made as to the "true" due date, ranging from today to July 17. There has also been huge speculation over the sex of the child.
