The youngsters from Woodfield Infants School, in Copthorne, staged the mini road closure yesterday.

The children's protest was organised as part of Walk to School Week which celebrates and encourages walking and cycling to school.

The section of Woodfield Road was closed after school between 3pm and 4pm.

Road closure signs were put up and a team of marshals in high visibility jackets were also on hand. The action was covered in the school's travel plan newsletter.

"We hope to highlight road safety issues and show what a difference less traffic at the school gate can make," it said.

The school has had issues with motorists parking on white zig zag lines either side of the zebra crossing outside the school, which is a traffic offence, according to the newsletter.

And the letter also warns that traffic wardens are set to patrol the area in the future to deter people from parking illegally.
