Why did the duck cross the road? To get her ducklings to the other side.

This is the sight which greeted shoppers in Shrewsbury town centre yesterday as a duck took her brood for a waddle in the morning sunshine.

The adorable family was caught on camera by Marisa Harrison as they made their way along St Mary's Street and Castle Street. The 14 ducklings obediently followed their mother through the town centre – even bringing traffic to a halt as they tried to cross a busy road.

The sight of the family delighted town centre shoppers who stopped and photographed the ducklings' quacking good adventure. Marisa, who was in Shrewsbury for a business meeting, said: "It was so sweet.

"The ducklings were so tiny I think they must have hatched by the church.

"Everyone paved the way for them and a lot of people were taking photos.

"At one point they tried to cross the road and a bus driver had to slam on his brakes. I think it was the sunshine that brought them out. Everywhere they went they had a gaggle of people around them."

Eventually with the help of passers-by the family were guided down Water Lane to the River Severn to enjoy a cooling dip after their journey.
