New College in Telford was visited by government inspectors last month and their report was published today.

Garry Phillips, principal and CEO of the college, said: "We are extremely pleased with this result which reflects well on the focus and commitment of our students, staff, employers, the local community and governors.

"This is great news for New College Telford and for the local community, with the college being the largest provider of Advanced Level courses in Telford & Wrekin and developing an innovative range of programmes including the new Technical Baccalaureate."

However, the report did say the outcomes for learners, English and modern foreign language all require improvement.

It said not enough students gain high grades and teachers' expectations are not high enough.

The report said: "Teaching, support and academic guidance, particularly for students on AS-level courses in English, require improvement.

"Teachers do not help students to gain independent learning skills, particularly in English."

However, it did add that the college has made changes to improve.

"Managers and staff have made a number of significant and highly positive changes to support students," it says. "The range of support services is now close to the main entrance and refectory, and is in an open plan setting.

"Teaching has improved which is reflected in the marked increase in students' achievement in 2011/12."

Tayla Pound, student sabbatical president at New College, said: "This Ofsted report highlights the college's commitment to quality."

Under the changes to the Ofsted guidelines, schools are still put into four categories, but are no longer satisfactory. They are either outstanding, good, require improvement or inadequate.
