Newport's Heart of England in Bloom team said it had decided to pull out of this year's contest.

The annual competition judges the floral decorations and general appearance of towns across the country. Newport has won nine gold awards in the last 10 years.

Newport in Bloom chairman Daphne Rogers said the decision had been taken as the new committee only took over in December.

She said: "We have decided not to enter this year – but our main aim is to make sure Newport is looking nice.

"We will definitely enter next year."
