Balloons have been released around the world to mark what would have been the sixth birthday of missing April Jones.

April's parents watched as hundreds of pink balloons were released from the housing estate in Machynlleth, Mid Wales, from where she vanished more than six months ago.

She was abducted while playing out on her bike on the Bryn-y-Gog estate on October 1.

Parents Coral and Paul Jones appealed for friends and well-wishers around the world to mark their daughter's sixth birthday yesterday.

The Facebook appeal, via a page set up by Mel Moon, April's Australia-based cousin, urged: "Get together and let off balloons for April."

Many in the community marked the event at Bryn y Gog green last night.

Mark Bridger, 47, of Ceinws, near Machynlleth, is charged with her abduction and murder and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

He is scheduled to stand trial at Mold Crown Court on April 29.
