Forecasters say today's milder weather could be just a temporary reprieve, with temperatures expected to drop as low as -4C (24.8F) later in the week. The mercury will start to fall from tonight, with temperatures dropping to 1C (33F).

A Met Office spokesman said: "The weather should soon brighten up today with spells of sunshine, especially through the afternoon.

"As it turns colder tomorrow the temperature will fall as low as -2C (28.4F) and showers may turn wintry over higher ground, and this will continue on Wednesday.

"More general rain, sleet and perhaps some snow is expected on Thursday."

The coldest weather is expected to hit south Shropshire, with forecasters warning that Ludlow should expect temperatures to hit freezing point today and then drop as low as -5C (23F) towards the end of the week.
