Jane Evans is part of the Macmillan team in Shropshire supporting people with cancer. Here she explains a little bit more about her role.

"I've recently been appointed by The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist. My role involves looking after people with musculo-skeletal cancer, such as sarcomas and bone tumours.

"I help to support people with cancer both when they are first diagnosed, and throughout their illness. When people are told they have cancer they often experience a wide range of emotions, and they are often unsure about where to get the information and support they need.

I'm there to help people with cancer make informed decisions about their treatment.

Help is at hand

"That's where I come in; I'm there to help people with cancer make informed decisions about their treatment, and guide them through the maze of different services. I am available to offer emotional and practical support to patients and their families from the time they are first diagnosed, and throughout their cancer journey.

I am able to explain what the diagnosis means and discuss treatment options available. I am also able to advise on coping strategies and management of symptoms which might arise from the illness itself or from the treatment side effects.

The right information is vital

"Often patients' care is shared between various specialists and different hospitals. I can provide a link with the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals involved, both in the hospital and at home, in order to enable continuity of care." When you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, speaking face to face with a specialist from your local Macmillan team can help support you every step of the way.
