Contractor EMS Services Ltd has set aside four weeks to pull down the 24-metre high North Silo ahead of the potential redevelopment of the Flax Mill, which could start next summer if millions of pounds in funding can be secured.

Work started this morning on the job, in which a long-range excavator will be used to dismantle the silo which has suffered extensive damage from vandalism and arson.

The building has not been used since the Maltings closed in the late 1980s.

The demolition follows similar work to pull down the former Arriva bus depot, Midland Red Social Club, and Rexel Senate building in and around the Flax Mill site.

Andrew Paterson, from English Heritage, today said: "The demolition will increase safety on the site in the short-term, and is another important step forward for the Flax Mill project."
