Pair face benefits charges

A married couple appeared in Telford Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with falsely claiming nearly £65,000 in benefits.

Bernice Brazenell, 62, is accused of wrongly claiming a host of benefits including Jobseekers’ Allowance, income support, pension credit, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

She faces four charges of not notifying the authorities she was living with her husband Nigel Brazenell, of Purbeckdale, Dawley, which would have affected the amount she received.

Nigel Brazenell, 55, also faces four charges of causing or allowing his wife to fail to notify benefit chiefs of their circumstances.

Magistrates adjourned the case for committal papers to be prepared.

The couple will appear at the same court on October 16, when proceedings will be officially transferred to Shrewsbury Crown Court.
