World road race champion Cavendish, 27, – dubbed the fastest man on two wheels – will join Wiggins to spearhead the British-based Team Sky challenge in the race next month.

The race could be one of Cavendish’s last outings for Team Sky as he looks to move away to head his own team next season.

Stage six of the tour will start in Welshpool on September 14.

It will start from Powis Castle at 10.15am before conducting a lap around the town and heading out towards Montgomery and then Newtown for an eventual finish in Caerphilly.
