Masked raider’s long prison term welcomed

A detective has welcomed the lengthy prison sentence handed out to a man for his part in a masked raid on the home of a Shropshire businessman – and said he hoped it would act as a deterrent to others tempted by a life of crime.
Detective Inspector Mark Bellamy was speaking after 22-year-old raider Nathan McDonald was jailed for nearly 10 years.
McDonald, of Merridale Street West, Wolverhampton, had admitted being one of up to four masked men, one of whom brandished a fake gun, who smashed their way into the home of Richard Barnfather and his fiancee Deborah Leadbetter on March 9.
Expensive cars – including a brand new £198,000 Aston Martin – and jewellery including a £25,000 engagement ring were taken as the couple were tied up and beaten just minutes after retiring to bed.
Mr Bellamy said: “I welcome the outcome of the court hearing.
“The long prison sentence imposed on McDonald sends out a clear message that those who resort to violent crime can expect little sympathy from the courts.
“Mr Barnfather and Miss Leadbetter were tied up and beaten, left battered and bruised, and needed to be examined at hospital following their terrifying ordeal.
“It was everyone’s worst nightmare – being attacked in their own home late at night by masked intruders.
“I would like to thank them both for their bravery, patience and support during the investigation.
“I wish to stress again that robbery and burglary offences, especially when violence is used, will remain a top priority for officers throughout Shropshire and other parts of West Mercia.
“Offenders like McDonald can expect to lose their liberty for a very long time.”
Anyone with information which could lead to the conviction of the other raiders is urged to call Shrewsbury CID on 0300 333 3000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
