Organisers of the Shrewsbury Flower Show today hailed the success of its 125th anniversary event after tens of thousands of people flocked to the Quarry showground.
Peter Road-Night, the show’s operations director and secretary of Shropshire Horticultural Society, said it was too early to tell how many people attended the event, but early indications suggested visitor numbers exceeded last year’s 48,000 total.
“The whole thing has been superb,” he said. “With the summer we have had this year, we have been phenomenally lucky.
“We as organisers are very, very happy with the show. What has been good this year is all the various parts have come together and that is what makes a good show.”
Exhibitors, traders and show-goers said they had enjoyed this year’s event, which was blessed with dry weather throughout.
Deirdre Hodgkinson, from Shropshire Plant Heritage, which exhibited a ruined abbey garden, said there had been plenty of interest from visitors.
“We have been selling seeds to quite young people which is really good,” she said.
First-time visitor Teresa Veitch, 66, from Bromsgrove, said she was impressed with the standard at Shrewsbury.

Was a good show because of the weather. I don't think for one minute that Fridays attendance was up on last year but Saturday's should be it was packed.
Really disappointed in the arena attractions this year, there really was not much going on in there and alot of peoplepicke dup on this and I heard lots of members mention this on both days. Also I heard many people say that the arena commentator was awful and he did mess up badly on the Saturday evening.
Fireworks were fantastic as usual. lets hope there is a better show next year...

The show was brilliant, and the weather made it even better! Michael Sanford, stop moaning, if you hated the arena show that much, then you should have got up and done something else.

My family went on Saturday and I must agree with Michael on all points raised in his post. When looking for the shows programme of events on their website- as I hadn't seen one previously in the Chronicle or the Star as they normally have printed prior to the show- I was pleased to see there was no mention of Fingle Dingle and his boring sidekick Slippery Sid with their exploding car. This arena act has been at the show for the past four years at least with the same predictable routine.I was not suprised to hear sighs around me of "Oh no, not again " as his act was announced by,and here again I agree, the awful arena commentator. The quad bikes were good but again have been at the show for the last three years The sheepdog/duck display was good but having seen them a couple of times before at the show how long will it be before they become boring. Having never heard of the Oysterband they were a suprisingly good group although they overran their time slot due to problems in setting up their equipment which could have been sorted whilst the quadbike act was on before them. Already behind time getting the crowds to go into the arena right up to the stage to listen to the group wasn't a good idea as it took ages for them to disperse much,I gather, to the annoyance of the British Legion flag bearers and the massed bands waiting to start the finale display. I suggest the organisers start looking now for some more new arena acts for next year if they want the crowds to keep coming. They could not do any better than look through programmes of years ago - parachute display teams, High Wire acts, Large model aircraft displays ,American or even English Marching Band displays, even the Red Arrows. There must be more than what we were offered this year. Any suggestions? The fireworks this year were spellbinding. The choreography of fireworks and music was superb. One last point as a military music fan I found that even when the two bands were massed they had a very weak sound, not enough big brass umph!

I have to agree with Michael and Edward here. Yes the show was good itself but yet again the arena was a big let down. I have been going for many years to the show and i the last four years the arena programme has been lame to say the least. There are so many options out there it is not difficult to get some variety instead of the same old acts or type of acts etc. Aircraft displays are always good and there aremany to choose from and not difficult to book the same with parachue display teams. Lots of people are talking about the shoddy commentator and arena running which hopefully we will see the last off.
All in all the show was good and the great weather made the difference. But things need to change.
