This is how a new £40 million shopping development including a new Waitrose supermarket will look once it is built in Shrewsbury.

The Oteley Road scheme, which will also see Percy Thrower’s Garden Centre relocated to a new 60,000 sq ft purpose-built premises, was given the go-ahead by members of Shropshire Council’s planning committee last week.

The new image shows how the Waitrose store will look alongside a seven-store shopping parade that will also be created as part of the plans.

It is expected to open by late 2014, creating about 200 jobs in the process.

The expansion of Percy Thrower’s Garden Centre and the creation of seven new shops is expected to bring about an additional 100 jobs.

The arrival of the new supermarket follows the opening of the Little Waitrose store at the top of Pride Hill in Shrewsbury town centre last year.

Members of a Shropshire Council planning committee gave their blessing to the scheme despite concerns being raised about the potential effect on trade in the town centre.

Council officers will now sit down with developers Garden & Leisure Ltd to negotiate the details of precisely what items can be sold by Waitrose and the garden centre in an attempt to minimise the effect on town centre businesses. The decision is also being sent to the secretary of state for approval before work can begin.

Simon Hoare, representing the developers, told the meeting ahead of the vote that extensive consultation had taken place on the scheme, with the public strongly backing the plans.

“There was 91.7 per cent of people declaring support for these proposals. This is an enormous investment in the Shrewsbury economy of £40 million, creating 300 new jobs,” he said.

Once the scheme is completed, 560 parking spaces, 102 cycle spaces and an access road off Oteley Road will also be created.

Developers will also provide £300,000 towards subsidising bus services to the site from the town centre over a three-year period.

Excellent news for Shrewsbury.

Excellent news for those with a vested interest. The golf course under concrete as soon as is respectably possible with the open fields beyond the New Meadow to quickly follow. Is this what we want? Because it's our town, not a few peoples, ours. Our environment and our quality of life. I do think the fresh ciabatta squad might find themselves in a substantial minority here.
