Drivers facing M54 closures

Shropshire motorists were this afternoon warned that major road schemes could bring heavy delays to two of the county’s busiest roads.

Shropshire motorists were this afternoon warned that major road schemes could bring heavy delays to two of the county’s busiest roads.

Part of the M54 motorway is to be closed down overnight between Saturday night and Monday morning so a bridge can be delivered to a business park between Telford and Wolverhampton.

And in a second scheme the westbound side of the A5 dual carriageway linking Telford and Shrewsbury will be hit by a week of overnight closures while it is resurfaced.

Drivers will be sent from junction 7 towards Wellington along the old A5 towards Emstrey Island.

The two schemes were announced by the Highways Agency this afternoon.

On the M54 the westbound carriageway between junction three at Albrighton and junction two at Featherstone will be completely closed overnight from 8pm to 5am on Saturday and Sunday night as part of work on the new i54 business park between Telford and Wolverhampton.

A 240-ton bridge is being delivered to the site as part of a major overhaul of transport links to the i54 which is hoped to be completed in December.

Motorists have been warned of further disruptions during the 22-week project to install the bridge, with more closures on September 22 and 29.

Lane restrictions will also apply at other times during the work.

More distruption will follow for motorists with works due to take place as a £36.7 million link road is built from the M54 to the i54 in October.

Meanwhile the A5 westbound carriageway will be closed between junction seven of the M54 and Preston Island on the edge of Shrewsbury from 8pm to 6am every night from tomorrow until August 9.

The closure has been ordered so that resurfacing work to be carried out on the carriageway.

Highways Agency spokeswoman Jo Carroll said the road would be open as normal during the day and diversions would be signed at night. “It will clearly cause some disruption at night,” she said.

According to the Highways Agency website, this weekend's closure affects only westbound traffic and the closure occurs from 8pm to 5am on Saturday/Sunday 4th/5th August and Sunday/Monday 5th/6th August, i.e. not closed from the 4th through to the 6th.
