Civic leaders in Whitchurch today confirmed their town clerk has resigned from his post – nine months after they suspended him. But they have refused to reveal whether his departure has cost town taxpayers money.

Peter Martin, who lives near Bridgnorth, was initially suspended by Whitchurch Town Council last November after a behind-closed-doors meeting of councillors.

Mr Martin, who used to be a Shropshire County Council member, had served for five years as clerk and responsible finance officer.

The council said: “Whitchurch Town Council wishes to announce the resignation of the town clerk Peter Martin, who has worked for the town council for the last five years.

“The town council wishes to take this opportunity to thank Peter Martin for his work at the council.”

Town leaders and Mr Martin were staying tight-lipped today when asked whether he received a payout. Mr Martin said: “I have enjoyed serving the people of Whitchurch for five years but I don’t wish to say anything else about my departure.”

Councillor Peggy Mullock, Whitchurch mayor, declined to comment when asked if his departure has cost town taxpayers money. But she hinted there could be plans to find a replacement. She said: “The staffing committee will be looking at what the staffing needs for the council are for the future.”
