The start of the 2012 Games was marked this morning with the ringing of thousands of bells across the country.

Conceived by Turner Prize-winner Martin Creed, All The Bells encouraged everyone across the UK to ring a bell for three minutes from 8.12am.

As well as church bells, hand bells, bicycle bells and doorbells were rung. Big Ben also chimed 40 times.

A bell was also rung at St Chad’s Church in Norton-In-Hales, near Market Drayton. Paul Mason, a bell ringer at the church, said: “I got involved because I live 100 yards away from the church and I think it is a good way to get involved in the celebrations in London.”

Newport’s town crier Peter Taunton also joined in. He said: “Newport has such a wonderful community. Everything that has been done people have come out and supported it.”
