Army and civilian chefs went head to head in a curry cook off to raise money for a soldiers charity.

Hundreds of people flocked to The Square on Saturday to take part in the Shrewsbury Big Curry event.

Army chefs from 143 (West Midlands) Brigade and civilian chefs from the TASTE kitchen at the Shropshire Food Enterprise Centre battled it out to see who could gain the most public votes for the tastiest curry.

Last year the culinary battle was won by cooks from the TASTE kitchen, but on Saturday it was the army chefs who emerged victorious– receiving the most votes for their beef madras. The event was held to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity

For a £5 donation to the charity shoppers received a portion of each curry with rice and then got to cast their vote for their favourite curry.

Last year’s event raised £7,500 for the Soldiers’ Charity which gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. But organisers are hoping to smash the total this year.

Organiser Nick Chavasse, managing Director of NRG Direct Mail Ltd and a former Major in the British Army, said: “This event brings people out and raises money for a vital cause.”
