Cuts stretching Shropshire's fire service to the limit

Shropshire’s cash-strapped fire and rescue service is being stretched to the limit and would be unable to cope with three emergencies at the same time without calling in off-duty staff, bosses said today.

Shropshire’s cash-strapped fire and rescue service is being stretched to the limit and would be unable to cope with three emergencies at the same time without calling in off-duty staff, bosses said today.

Paul Raymond, the county’s chief fire officer, said because of multi-million pound budget cutbacks there were just 23 incident commanders available to manage crews across the county.

That compares to an average of 64 top officers at other fire authorities in the country.

As a result Shropshire firefighters could only deal with two emergencies - such as a factory fire and a house blaze - at the same time.

They would be unable to deal with a third without relying off-duty staff, who may already have worked a full shift.

Mr Raymond said the service was ‘at the bare minimum’.

He said although the authority could manage on a day-to-day basis, concerns came when major events like the flooding which hit south Shropshire.

Six officers were on the duty roster during the flooding, but three off-duty officers had to be called in when 50 calls came in on a single night.

It meant more pressure was being put on a smaller number of staff.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Shropshire and Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority last week.

David Minnery, the authority’s vice chairman, said he feared the drop in officer numbers had gone ‘a shade too far’. We’re clearly in a position where people are being stretched – and overstretched in my view,” he said.

Members agreed that Mal Price, a Shropshire councillor and former firefighter, would lead a group to see what could be done to raise the number of incident commanders.

Stuart West, chairman of the authority, said he believed some success had come from talks with the Bob Neill, the fire minister, and he would continue to press for more money.

Looks like the cuts are going according to plan then - give it another couple of years and we'll be back in the 18th century depending on insurance company-funded fire services - no proof of insurance, no firefighters.

This sounds like another service that's ripe for takeover by G4S...

Yes Rob this is what the government want, a privatised fire service so the affulent areas can afford fire protection and us at the bottom of the ladder(excuse the pun)manage with the old parish fire pump idea.

Dear public services,

Your puppet government would like to thank you for your financial contribution towards the money squandering farce that is the olympic games .

So far we estimate the games to cost in the region of £24 billion, but you should know by now that we don't care how much taxpayers money we squander every year,as we know you will just have a little moan for a bit then settle back into your favourite chair to watch corry on the idiot box while we work out new ways to rob you of your hard earned pennies.

yours,

the rich buggers laughing at you while living off of you.

I know what you mean mark, I myself had to sell off my second best string of polo ponies and cancel last years sking trip just to make ends meet!

Any more of this and I'll move back to Monaco (will miss the fish and chips of course).

"then settle back into your favourite chair to watch corry on the idiot box"

...just make sure you don't leave the chip pan on...

Sound advice Rob.

Reminds me of one of the main differences between soldiers and firemen.............................................almost impossible to dip a fireman in a boiled egg.

We have to remember that at the moment we ALL get Fully Comprehensive "Fire" insurance, you dial 999 n you GET a Fire Appliance, it won't be this way if the cuts that are projected really happen. We cut & cut & cut then the goalposts move just that bit more...... Enough is Enough.

Doubter

When the cuts were announced by our caring Goverment, those on the Right where heard to shout "MORE, MORE, MORE" it'll only get worse once the FIBSDEMS are wiped out at the next election and the Tories form a majority.
