Three men had to be rescued in the south of the county and one woman was treated for shock as the floodwaters struck. Four stretches of the River Teme, which flows through south Shropshire, were on flood alert today.
One man had to dragged to safety from floodwaters in Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, at about 4am today.
An 81-year-old woman who had to be rescued from her home in Cleobury Mortimer, and a man was plucked to safety from The Grove, Minsterley. Another man was rescued in Ludlow and a woman treated for shock in after being stuck in water, also in Ludlow.
In total Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service took 40 calls between 8pm and 10pm last night and rescued a total of 12 people.
Crews used a boat to ferry swamped residents to safety in Neen Sollars, near Cleobury Mortimer, at about 4.50am today. Homes were evacuated in a separate drama in Ditton Mill, near Cleobury Mortimer, at about 11.50 last night.
Water was five-and-a-half feet deep in some places and resident Michael Hadley said: “The levels are frightening.”
A fire service spokesman said: “The floods have been mainly in south Shropshire and Minsterley where people had to be rescued from properties. If life is at risk dial 999. For flood inquiries ring 0845 988 1188.”
The A49 at Craven Arms was closed last night and the Environment Agency issued four flood warnings on the River Teme – at Shelsley Walsh and Clifton upon Teme, at Knightwick, Doddenham and Broadwas, at Leigh and at Stanford Bridge.
