A couple were caught on CCTV having sex in the centre of Shrewsbury after going out to watch England play France in Euro 2012.

Kevin Naylor, 25, and his 19-year-old girlfriend Catherine Hughes, were spotted having sex in Mardol Head, just 100 metres from their home in Market Street. Their behaviour was watched by CCTV operators, who contacted the police, magistrates at Shrewsbury heard.

Naylor appeared in court yesterday charged with drunk and disorderly behaviour and was given a nine month conditional discharge.

Hughes had been charged with the same offence but the court was told she had been let off with a caution.

The court heard the couple were spotted at about 1.15am on June 12.

Mr John Barnett, prosecuting, told magistrates: “Police were called to say a man and a woman were having sex in public in an area monitored by CCTV in the middle of Shrewsbury town centre.

“Mr Naylor was arrested 100 metres from his home. He gave no thought that others would see his actions.”

The court heard that the couple had been out drinking since 3pm the previous day.

They had been out in Shrewsbury town centre to watch England’s opening Euro 2012 game against France, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The court heard how during the evening the couple had spent £120 on booze including beer, shots and spirits.

Mr Stephen Scully, for Naylor, said his client had begun to pester his partner as they walked home.

He said: “This is a fairly unusual one to put before the court.

“He is extremely embarrassed by the situation and that embarrassment will continue.

“They were young and foolish and got caught in the act. No member of the public viewed the act.”

Chairman of the magistrates, Mrs Anna Turner formally withdrew the drunk and disorderly charge against Hughes.
