Shrewsbury's new £46 million mental health centre will open to the public in mid-September, health bosses announced today.

The Redwoods Centre, which is replacing Shelton Hospital, will open its doors on September 13, with the South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust marking the opening by holding its AGM on the same day.

Patients will not move in until later in the month, so the Trust is taking the opportunity to throw open its doors to service users, carers, staff, family, friends and interested members of the public.

There will be an opportunity to look around the new building, meet some of the staff, and admire the specially commissioned art work – some of which has been created by local children.

The centre will provide 80 adult mental health beds for Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin, and 23 low secure beds for the West Midlands.

It will provide separate areas for the treatment of people with acute mental health needs and for people with organic conditions, such as dementia.

There will also be a bistro, spiritual centre, library and pharmacy on site. All the bedrooms are en-suite, with separate areas for men and women.

Steve Jones, chairman of the Trust, said: "The people of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin have been waiting for their new inpatient mental health facilities since 1956 so we are all very excited about opening the Redwoods Centre and want to share it with as many people as possible."
