Joe Hart admitted he was ‘devastated’ after England’s footballers crashed out of the Euro 2012 championships on another night of penalty heartache.

The Shropshire-born goalkeeper failed to save any of Italy’s spot-kicks in last night’s quarter final shootout, and said: “I’d like to be optimistic now, but that’s not the feeling in my heart at the moment.

“I’m an emotional guy and I put everything I had into these past couple of weeks.”

It was the fifth time in succession – and the sixth in seven attempts – that England have been knocked out of a major football tournament on penalties.

Ashley Young and Ashley Cole both missed their spot-kicks in the penalty competition, after the match had finished goalless at the end of extra time, despite being dominated by Italy.

More than 20 million people tuned in to watch on television, and Shropshire pubs were packed. Hart said: “I’m gutted for the people who paid money to come out here to support us and see us and for the people back home.

“I thought it was going to be our night because of the side we had, the heart we had, the quality we had, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. We didn’t do well in the shoot-out, myself included.”

Asked how he would reflect on the tournament overall, the former Shrewsbury Town star said: “Right now, not well. We’ll have to wait and see in a couple of days.

“I went in confident we would win. I was required to step up but didn’t make the saves. I expect to make saves, I feel like no-one can beat me. We’ve lost, but I don’t think anyone has let the country down.”

Former England star and AFC Telford United manager Andy Sinton said: “Roy Hodgson and his team won’t be flying home in disgrace.

“Expectations were low before the tournament and I think everyone realised we were going to find it tough going once the top nations started to appear on our radar.”

Hodgson said he was proud of the togetherness his squad had show, and believes he has the nucleus of a good team going into the World Cup qualifiers, which kick off in September.

And only last week he was not bothered about the prospect of penalties. He had spent a lot of time watching videos of Italys penalty takers, and knew where they would put them.

Hmmmmm,,seems they never watched the same videos, how unsporting of them.

Other than that, England got what they deserved. Nothing, from a very negative display. Just shows how poor the English premiership is on the world stage. Mind you, the goalposts had a good game, got Mr. Hart out of the mire a couple of times.

twisting my melon

You forgot to mention their inflated salaries... Thats what people with very limited knowledge of the game normally bang on about..

Lee

Oh for lords sake, shut-up Colin please!!!

town fan

just to pick up on you colin... its the Premier League - they have not called it the Premiership for years and years

Colin.Dodd.

Oh dear, we are in a bad mood today aren't we,

OK, give me some positives from the game. That should keep you busy for 5 seconds. They were rubbish, had they been playing Germany, it would have been even more embarrassing.

Maybe Hart should have "shut up" last week, instead of telling us he knew where the penalties were going.

town fan,,call it what you like, it's still sub-standard on the world stage.

twisting my melon

They made the Qtr Finals ......we can't all be Brazil you know..

Two Tone

Its not about being in a bad mood. Its more about people who clearly know little about the game (ref T.M.Melon June 25. 2012 at 14:28!)who jump on the pundit band-wagon & spout the very same sitting-on-the-fence & knock England rubbish.

No sportsman will go into their arena admitting fears of any particular element of their oppositions armoury. It's not just the playground kick and rush you know! It's bluff & double bluff mind games too. How long would Hart or Terry or Gerrard last in the top flight should they confess to being 'scared' of the opposition, or that they haven't done their homework on the opponent? Not long I'd wager.

As for England being sub-standard, that just means they have not acheived YOUR expectations, not mine. Shrewsbury Town, & I am not a fan, have had a series of good seasons resulting this year in promotion(congrats). Behind Swindon Town they were the best League two had. Should Shreswbury or Swindon for that matter arrive for a competitive game at Old Trafford I know where my money would be. Niether STFC's are sub-standard, just not as good as!

For England to have qualified throught the Euros & held a rspected Italian team for 120 minutes is an achievment.

I'd love England to be in the same class as Germany, Spain Portugal and alike but I am bright enough to know that we are not and know too that the England team is NOT sub-standard.

It does appear that Joe Hart got a bit arrogant before the game. Perhaps he should have kept quiet about how he knew where all the pens were going. Poor England performance overall, when are they going to learn how to keep the ball.

doff mandsley

play them like chelsea would, frusterate them until penalties come up, then destroy them with penalties and hopefully they will miss.

guess what? thats what Did happen it WAS englands game to win. not even harts fault the videos floating about reflect an incorrect standpoint it being Harts fault but truthfully it was englands Win with poor Penalty shots. those poor people that boarded the plane to kiev just to be let down like that. all 12,000 of them have my empathy.

Nistagmus

Now, I'm no expert on football, but I reckon if England had scored in the previous 120 minutes there would have been no need for penalties.

The graduate

Well perhaps the England team and the footballers it is made up of, are not a world class team? ?, the players individually may be, but when all put together England have a team which is on par with say Clacton fc playing man united?.

England football is like English tennis MADE UP OF OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OOOOOOOOOOOOH AHHHHHHH ERRRRRRRRRRR OF HOME NOW .

Captain S

We defended well and got lucky not to concede in 120 mins. If we are to do better in future we have to be more positive in midfield and up front. Rooney should have been taken off he was terrible. Spain took off Xavi last night!

James

Agree with Two Tone, except that the difference btw England and Italy is less Man Utd and Shrewsbury than (say) Man Utd and West Brom. In other words, Italy are better but, with everyone playing to their max AND a little more luck, England could realistically have won.

There were almost no expectations of England before this tournament. The performance in the last World Cup had been poor, there was chaos in appointing the new coach, who then had just two weeks to work with the team, injury withdrawals etc.

That England then came top of the group exceeded what expectations there had been and led to hopes that maybe, just maybe, they might amaze us all and get to the final.

It didn't happen because Italy were indeed better. The micro-contest between Pirlo and Hart in the shhot-out was a demonstration of how they were better. But England showed they could stick to a plan(even Steven Gerrard) and some of the younger players suggested they have big futures ahead. Certainly, they need to learn to keep the ball, and perhaps team selection needs to be braver.

But the way Italy played against Germany last night makes England's efforts look even more respectable.

Stokey

Isn't amazing the number of armchair experts out here, and this from a group of people who get excited about their local team getting into the formerly described third division.

It's like taking advice on singing from Telly Savalas.

Karl

If a picture paints a thousand words than why can't I paint you.......Who loves ya baby

twisting my melon

The Germans did a great job of making England look not as bad as some thought last night..

Karl

I'm never ceased to be amazed at the words that come out when a football match has been lost; 'devastated','gutted','heartbroken' to name but a few.

This may be a shock to some "nobody died, it's only a game", and above all "get a life".

twisting my melon

" Amazed " at the words to come out when a match is lost........bit strong, its not like anyone died.

Rob

I'm gobsmacked at your use of the word 'bit', Sir I challenge you to a duel, you.....you....you cad!

spencer

It makes me incandescent with rage when insults like " cad " are thrown at me..

town fan

I find it astonishing the view of the keyboard warrior / arm chair fan - How on earth you can describe him as arrogant is beyond me.

When someone has immense confidence and belief in themselves they are usually praised and celebrated in other countries, yet on our little island we always go for the negative.

Equally, do you really think Joe simply comes out and makes such bold statements like "I will save penalties for England!?" His words are twisted to suit the agenda of the headline and story.

Perhaps you should watch a full England Press Conference on Sky News and then look at what is written in the newspapers and online the next day.

roy of the rovers

er was i watching a different match?. england held the probable euro champions for 120 minutes. englands manager had 5 weeks to prepare his squad in spite of injuries.

credit where credit is due. well done england, well done roy hodgson and very well done joe hart.
